The Fredberg, recently rediscovered by Fred, has become very popular in recent years and is certainly one of the most popular internship tours.
Especially for birdwatchers it is an absolute must, with a chance of the Cock-of-the-Rock, if it is in season.
Spotting animals, everything that is available with a very knowledgeable guide (Fred himself and family members).
You get adventure, natural beauty and beautiful viewpoints and a whole experience.
The back to basic feeling, but still with sufficient and good guidance available.
The literal and figurative highlight of this tour is an overnight stay (and sunrise) on top of the Fredberg.
Day 1 – By boat and foot
Departure from Paramaribo, after introduction and coffee (registration 7:00 at the Henck Arronstraat) towards Atjoni. On the way we stop at the highlights and we are told a few things (at Suralco about the former bauxite factory that is closed and further on at Klaaskreek for the checkpoint and then the transmigration village Brownsweg. Just before Atjoni you leave the main road into the forest to the base camp. Here you will find a lodge on a creek, where you will have a hearty lunch and then start the walk to the top of the Fredberg. (3-4 hour walk through untouched nature). On the way the flora and fauna are central and this is pointed out and explained. After a fairly heavy climb the moment of reward has arrived, there are several viewpoints, with beautiful views over the vast forest. After dinner the sunset is impressive, and the starry sky on a clear night is magical! (on the mountain there are hammock camps, an eco-shower and toilet (improvised) available
Day 2 –Fredberg
At a beautiful sunrise you hear the forest (below you) waking up. With a cup of tea or coffee it is truly a great spectacle and listening experience. After a hearty breakfast follows a forest walk, during which we look for animals (Rock cock, jaguar, sloth, monkeys, in short all the beautiful things that come on or near our path are explained and spotted by expert eyes). Upon arrival at the base camp, lunch is served and there is an opportunity to swim in the creek and take a good shower. This evening you sleep on a bed, but before that there are still various activities such as fishing, a boat trip and a Tarzan swing (depending on the water level). And after dinner you go with the guide in search of nocturnal animals (caimans, snakes, spiders and night birds). At the campfire you can chat and enjoy the afterglow.
Day 3 – Return journey
After a good breakfast there is the opportunity to enjoy the base camp, swim a bit and if there is interest try to spot some animals with the guide. Then it is inevitably time to say goodbye. After lunch at the base camp follows the return journey to Paramaribo where you will arrive in the early evening, with a truly special experience behind you that you will remember for a long time.
