French Guiana is one of the neighbouring countries of Suriname, and one of “the three Guianas”.
French Guiana is an overseas province (department) of France and the people here speak French.
For a nice day out we drive to Albina and cross over by canoe to the border town of Saint Laurent du Maroni.
This town forms a tolerance zone, which you can visit without stamps in your passport and without affecting your Surinamese visa. (EU residents can freely enter French Guyana, but if you go further than Saint Laurent, which we do not do during this tour, you would need a new tourist visa for Suriname).
In Saint Laurent du Maroni you will have the opportunity to walk around the market and shop in one of the large supermarkets, Super U. Here you will find mainly European (French) products.
We will also visit the old prison where “le Papillon” was imprisoned before being sent to the Devil’s Islands.
You will also get the local tour of the prison.
After this nice day we will return to Paramaribo.
This tour is only available on Saturdays (due to the market and prison tour).
In French Guyana, you will be walking. If you are not a good walker, you can arrange a taxi ride at your own expense (via the guide). This will cost around 6 euros per ride.
Vegetarians: For vegetarians, there is a special menu. (if this is explicitly indicated in advance)
