GALIBI TOUR

The Galibi nature reserve, with a surface of 4000 hectares is located on the north coast of Suriname.
This region is known as one of the most important nesting beaches for sea turtles in the West Atlantic area.
There are mainly large populations of leatherback turtles to be found here, which can grow up to 2 meters long and have swum thousands of kilometers to lay here.
The other large sea turtle species that we can encounter is the Green Green Turtle (Surinamese: krape).
The smaller species that we can find are the olive ridley and the hawksbill.

On day 1 you will depart from Paramaribo by bus towards the east of Suriname.
At the border town of Albina you will cross the Marowijne River by canoe, towards the beach of Galibi.

The Galibi beach offers you many relaxation possibilities, which you can use after arrival.
For example, there is the possibility to swim, or relax in the hammock.
At 20:00 you travel under the guidance of your guide to the nesting place of the turtles.
The sea turtles come here after sunset to make a nest and to lay their eggs.
You can experience this entire process up close (of course we do not disturb the animals).

Day 2 is dedicated to the surroundings.
The program includes a tour of the Indian village where you will be staying, a visit to the school and you will have the opportunity to swim or buy a souvenir while lunch is being prepared for the road.

On the way there or back (definitely on Wednesdays and Saturdays because of the market) we make a stop in Saint Laurent du Maroni to visit French Guiana.
Here we visit the prison (also known for le Papillion) and take a small village walk.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays we visit the market.
Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to buy some French products in a supermarket (only euros are accepted here).
